RIDING AND ROAD SAFETY TALK

With SIC Road Safety Officer

Elaine Skinley in the Town Hall

This well attended talk gave practical advice on riding on Shetland’s roads, highlighted all the items in the higway code relating to horses and gave information on the high visibility wear available for horses and riders

“Horse riders are always vulnerable out on the roads, particularly with the nights drawing in." Elaine said.  "Everyone riding horses at this time of year should be fully kitted out with the correct reflective gear and make sure they put it on every time they go out"

Elaine distributed hi visibility garment to everone present, leaflets, information sheets and even torches!!

Allison Fellows gave all the Pony Club Members lessons and help in preparing for their next Tests.  All the riders did very well and went away with some pointers and things to work on.

We are very grateful to Allison for fitting us in as it is soo good for the members to have the opportunity of having a different Instructor.

Allison is a very experienced Pony Club Instructor, Tutor and Dressage Judge and we are very lucky to have someone of her experience and expertise visiting us on a regular basis.

 EQUINE STUDIES OPEN DAY

Allison Fellows, North Highland College Tutor held an open evening for anyone interested in Equine Studies by Distance Learning.  There was a lot of interest in the Certificate course for Equine Skills and a further two students enrolled for the HNC.

A very sucessful outcome and we are all looking forward to productive Winter months!

SATURDAY 20th Aug, 2011

HORSE AGILITY COMPETITION

There were lots of entries for this event where the horse or pony is led or ridden through a range of challenging obstacles.  These included stepping up onto a Podium, negotiating a narrow gap and zig zag corridor, standing quietly away from the handler and bending through poles very close together.

Unfortunately the rain stopped play, but most of the remaining competitors were able to complete their rounds the following day.

Horse Agility is unique in that, everyone can compete together from the youngest to the oldest, both horse and rider!

 Oldest Horse! Oldest Handler!
